Description: Fiscal Literacy Grant Summit - The Summit, which include the use of innovative technologies, and innovative “Deep Dive” sessions, comes with a twist: several groups of Millennials will leave the summit with grants to start making change on the issue of Fiscal Literacy in their local communities. And even more interesting, the individuals and teams can receive up to $5K in funding from a group their Millennial peers at the millennial-led non-profit Mobilize.org. A product of grassroots organizing and social entrepreneurship itself, Mobilize.org hopes that this summit will be the first in a series of summits to address issues ranging from civic participation to economic inequity. Grant Summit winners will each receive a grant, and more importantly, will receive the support of Mobilize.org and our extensive partner network to champion their proposal and create systemic and long lasting change in their communities.

Description: Service Learning - Service Learning is a class a teacher at Putnam City West High School has been using to target "at risk" Hispanic students and give them an opportunity to become involved in and participate in activities throughout the community. The goal of this class is to allow students to experience their own community in a way they may never have before and to build a sense of ownership and pride in the difference they can make by doing volunteer work. The class is a semester long and begins with hours spent in the class room doing "Team Building" activities, role playing realistic situations that students may face, and discussing and reflecting on students behavior in public and in certain situations. The students brainstrom and research needs throughout their community and begin contacting organizations to partner with. Once the students are ready, they attend a different type of community service activity each day. By the end of the semester most students have completed 50-60 hours of volunteer work, which can be a huge benefit when applying for college and scholarships. Some of the activities and projects the Service Learning classes have completed are working at "Feed the Children", "The Infant Crisis Center", "The Children's Center", "Grace Living Center", "Presbyterian Urban Mission", "The Oklahoma City ZOO", "The Harn Homestead", and others. The students have been able to pack boxes for the hungry, sort clothing and diapers for infants, play bingo with the elderly, organize and put together a Christmas party and gifts for needy children, tutor elementary and middle school children, they have done yard work and gardening, and also been able to do behind the scenes work with animals at the ZOO and volunteer in the Land Run re enactment, for hundreds of Elementry school kids. These amazing and one of a kind experiences are something students will always remember and at the end of each semester are required to reflect upon about how they have affected and changed their lives. It is amazing to see the growth and motivation that many of these students go through over the course of this class and how much self confidence and pride they gain by being an important, productive part of their community. January will be the start of the third Service Learning class at PC WEST.

Description: Immigrants and Farm workers: Contributions and Issues - The 430 students and 16 teachers of the TCHS Service Learning Academy have adopted immigration and migrant workers' issues as the central theme for this year's service learning projects. We will be partnering with immigration and farm workers' organizations, colleges, the Mexican Consulate, and other organizations who will help us to promote awareness on the need for comprehensive immigration reform and to address issues related to Central Florida migrant farm workers and immigrants in our community, state, and nation. We will partner with Rollins College students to investigate what happened to Lake Apopka, called a "dead" lake. Toxic pesticides from farm lands surrounding the lake have poisoned the water and killed the fish and wildlife. Cries were raised calling for the restoration of the lake and prevention to save the impacted wildlife. But what about the farm workers who were exposed to the pesticides? Some have died and others have chronic illnesses related to pesticide exposure. Service Learning academy students will be meeting with and interviewing those farm workers. We are compiling their stories and publishing a book to bring awareness to their plight. We are also interviewing immigrants and publishing their stories. There is a lot of misinformation about why the newest immigrants have come to the United States and sometimes their valuable contributions to our community are ignored. SL students will be tutoring students in a multi-cultural class. These students recently moved to the United States and have low level English skills. We will work to raise their reading, writing and speaking skills. They will join us in our service learning projects, helping us to glean the fields, meeting and interviewing the farm workers and immigrants, and working with the children of the migrant farm workers. We will be reading several books, hosting speakers and learning about the farm workers and immigrants. We will also be using the Cesar Chavez Foundation curriculum in our classes. We will sponsor a Cesar Chavez service learning project to mark the anniversary of the birth of this great American hero, March 30, 2009. Students will also conduct advocacy efforts to get Cesar Chavez's birthday recognized as a state holiday. We are sponsoring a book drive to collect books for the farm workers' center to benefit the families and children of the farm workers. During the week of the Learn and Serve Challenge we will be writing editorials on issues related to comprehensive immigration reform and farm workers' issues, tutoring immigrants, and meeting with farm worker organization leaders. The academy students and teachers will host the 5th Annual OCPS District Service Learning Conference. This year the workshops will relate to immigration, farm workers, and environmental and economic issues related to the use of pesticides and production of food. We will invite workshop leaders from across the U.S. that are experts in this field to lead student and teacher conference workshops. We also will be tutoring immigrants to pass the citizenship test.

Description: Restore, Rededicate, & Remember Postcard Campaign - The mission of the Foundation is to raise funds for the restoration of the DC War Memorial, and to sponsor and secure legislation for the re-dedication of the site. HR 482 has been introduced in Congress, and the Foundation has begun raising awareness and funds to establish a true national memorial. To assist in this process we have developed the "Restore, Rededicate, & Remember Postcard Campaign". This is an extremely simple campaign for anyone of any age to effectively facilitate! We send a packet of postcards (or more if you request!) that have been professionally printed with images of the state of the current DC War Memorial. You ask friends, family, co-workers, students, customers, etc to donate a minimum of $1 for the opportunity to write their name on a postcard in support of the historic HR 482 bill. As you are collecting completed postcards, display them proudly around your school, business, home, etc! Then when your individual campaign is complete, either personally send the completed postcards to your congressmen to encourage them to support HR 482, or return the completed cards for us to send to your congressmen along with the collected donations in the self-addressed envelope we provide. It’s that simple! This is a fantastic grass roots campaign that will not only encourage our leaders to act quickly in Restoring, Rededicating, and Remembering the WWI Memorial; but it will also help us begin raising the funds necessary to make Mr. Frank Buckles dream a reality.

Activities include: shore line clean up, habitat restoration and maintenance projects, native plant and tree plantings, invasive species patrol, species counts, and trail maintenance projects. Description: Campaign Earth: Observing National Public Lands Day at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area - The students of Woodmere Middle School - Team 8A continued its commitment to “Campaign Earth” - a living unit in interdisciplinary learning and environmental service - with its second trip to the Town of Hempstead's Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside to complete its second service learning project. Under the direction of Conservation Biologist and certified GLOBE Program specialist, Mr. Mike Farina and their teachers Ms. Diane Bentivegna and Mr. Jeremy Stein, this event was planned in honor of the 16th Annual National Public Lands Day, our nation’s largest hands-on service effort to improve and enhance public lands in America. This year, the theme for National Public Lands Day focused on the connection between land and water resources since it also coincides with National Estuaries Day. Accordingly, these students rolled up their sleeves and set aside a day to lend a helping hand to Long Island’s tidal wetlands which provide protection for shellfish, small fish, migratory birds and many other animals. Acting as young conservationists, they collected and logged vital weather-related data for the Globe Program's international "Climate Research Campaign." They also conducted soil testing and planted several blueberry bushes and other varieties of native vegetation to give a boost to wildlife habitat, prevent soil erosion and improve air and water quality. In addition, students made natural bird feeders to support the winter migratory songbirds who frequent the south shore of Long Island every year. These young conservationists also donated spring bulbs for the Marine Nature Study Area's Beautification Project as well as bags of birdseed for the winter bird migration. To recognize their commitment to the environment, these students were awarded an official "Certificate of Leadership in Service and Learning" from the Town of Hempstead's Conservation Biologist Mike Farina and Town Supervisor Kate Murray. With a compelling call for all Americans to participate in meaningful public service, this service-learning learning project was a premier opportunity for Woodmere Middle School students to take a leadership role in helping to preserve, protect and enhance their local community's public lands and water resources.

Description: Piece by Peace Be the Change - This year’s theme is “Piece by Peace Be the Change”. This year’s Co-Chairs are Dakarai Carter and Taylor Bowerman, both Juniors in High School. While the group intends to continue their presence in and around the City of Detroit there will be an intense effort to expand the project throughout Michigan this year with a goal of recruiting as many as 3000 young people It is the young people’s feeling that it really is about “neighbor helping neighbor”. It is about moving away from the TV and meeting face to face with the people we live with. It is about meeting new people, making new friends and reaching out and giving a hand where it is needed. It is by developing these friendships that we change the world. This is truly about making our world a better place to live. As Derrick Smith, past GYSD Co-Chair put it after a very dedicated day of work: “Doing my part in the community means so much to me. What makes this experience so important is the fact that I got to work with other youth in a neighborhood I knew. One day I will be able to look back on the this day and say I helped to start a movement, a change in my community and our world.” Derrick Smith, Jr.
